this workshop was primarily about drawing the head. i found it quite difficult as the only way i've ever learnt how to draw a head/face is by sitting and drawing quite a traditional portrait i guess. the first three are drawn from stills from a short film called l'atalante. the last one is of my friend Sam, using an oil pastel in each hand and drawing with both hands at the same time

first drawing workshop

we've had a couple of really fun and useful drawing workshops over the past two weeks, these drawings are from the first session. the first two are drawn from stills from a video of a man showing off some karate skills, the second two are from jean luc goddards film pierrot le fou, chosen because of his use of primary colour in the film (it's also a very good film). it's a nice break to sit and draw in this way, and is good practice for the way you think about how to draw something. it's more like drawing a structure, rather than sitting and drawing a pretty picture which is quite challenging as it's quite easy to think of drawing in that way.

a few more scans from my research sketchbook. out of the list of five outcomes we were told to choose from (GIFS, mural, pictograms, activity book, activity model) I've chosen to create an activity book/zine on my subject, as from trying to do my own research on it I've found that there's been a very small amount of books published on the subject, so I think it would be good to make one. We also had to choose an age group to aim this book at (age 4, age 8, age 12, age 16 and age 20), so mine is going to be aimed at 8 year olds I think, hopefully the subject of death is suitable enough for an 8 year old and not too heavy, I suppose we started learning about the Egyptians' death rituals from an early age. I'd quite like to further develop the scratchcard idea, and hopefully print some stickers which will be included with the book that can then be stuck onto the pages to finish off a missing element (or something like that).

pitt rivers museum second time round

behind on updates woops, before the christmas holidays we went as a class to the pitt rivers museum in oxford - i hadn't been there before and it's amazingg. we had to choose something from the 200,000 objects that were packed in the cabinets to base our Fact project on which is really cool yet quite difficult. I drew a few things that I kinda liked when we went but I was so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff in there that I couldn't really pick the first time so I had to go back a second time. When I went back I noticed these small paper models of objects that originated from China in the Living and Dying section. Looking at them closely I realised that they're actually paper effigies that craftsmen make as a tradition to be burned at funerals to provide the deceased with the necessities of life. They believe that these objects get transmitted into the afterlife by fire. I really like the idea and how they were labelled so I decided to base my project on this.

my finished ex libris image to be printed on the risograph machine. the aim of this part of our workshops was to understand cmyk, colour separations and how colours are mixed when transferred into print. quite complicated to get your head around at first but i think i understand it now. i’ve made it pretty busy as it’s just a test card image so mostly i was just trying out different layering combinations with random images from my sketchbooks. the black lines are going to be gold, the pink is going to be pink and the cyan is going to be green, the purple is where the pink and cyan layers have overlapped. it’s gonna be printed at A6 size. i'm pretty happy because before illustrator used to make me pretty angry and now it's kind of my friend and we get along so that's good.

a little while ago i went to the pipilotti rist exhibition at the hayward gallery, it's really really great, the huge widescreen videos were nice to watch but my favourite parts were the little installations that she created which she then projected a video onto. it finishes quite soon so definitely go take a look at it if you can!

We went on a drawing trip to the V&A Museum of Childhood on friday. It's easily one of the best museums I've been to, couldn't quite bring myself to leave at lunch time to go to the Geffrye Museum with the rest of the class so ended up staying there all day drawing, I especially loved all of the wooden and tin toys from around the 50s/60s/70s. Most of the displays were pretty low down so kids can look at them properly which made me feel like a bit of a giant. Although I stayed there all day I'd really like to go back and visit again because there was so much I'm sure I probably still missed some good things. there's a few more drawings on my flickr

my finished doll for the fiction project on terra incognita. he's based on a character from my book and is covered in bug bites and all swollen and horrible because he's a mean character. this is the first doll i've ever made properly in this way, the coloured bug bite circles are made out of liquid latex and i made the feet, arms and nose out of fimo. the eyes are just made out of cotton wool which was quite fiddly to sew

We had a really interesting visiting practitioner talk this wednesday from Graham Rawle. The only work of his I had ever looked at in the past was the Wizard of Oz book that he illustrated (scene of the emerald city above). He showed us some examples from a project he did called Niff Actuals that I liked, the idea being re invented board games. My favourite one is the 'Its My World' Globe where he asked artists to draw the world onto a blank globe from memory. I enjoy looking at drawings like this that people have done from memory because there's always something about them that's really funny. Probably because it's near enough impossible to get them perfectly right unless you're like that guy that can draw a whole city from memory.

The other day I received the 7" record in the post that I did the artwork for, for an upcoming Japanese electro/psychedelic artist called Sapphire Slows, who is with Big Love records in Tokyo. The lighting in my room isn't the best so I'm having difficulty getting good photos of it. I was asked for the front cover to be of a girl, and the back cover could basically be anything I wanted which was fun! I also designed the stickers that are on the actual record itself, the pattern is taken from a sapphire. They also got some tote bags printed with the cat from the back cover on them which is really cool. I had to learn how to use Illustrator properly so I could overlay my drawings onto the templates they had sent me which is something I had never really had to think about before, and I now also understand what CMYK mode actually is because I literally didn't have a clue. Doing this has kind of made me want to start collecting records because I think it's a really nice way to collect art work, again something that I had never really thought much about before. I had a really fun time doing it and working with Big Love records and it's the first time I've ever seen my work properly printed like this which I'm just really really excited about. Visiting Japan would be a dream.

postmodernism at the v&a

The V&A have a really good postmodernism exhibition on at the moment, it took me about 3 hours to go around it all, it's huge and packed with lots of interesting examples to look at, and is probably one of the best exhibitions I've been to in a long time. I'd really recommend going to it! It was quite difficult to draw in there as it was so busy and you couldn't really sit down anywhere, but I managed to do a couple of drawings of my favourite things.

Totem Pole by Ettore Sotssass. I hadn't heard of this designer before but I really like the patterns and colours in his pieces. His pieces of furniture remind me of Kandinsky paintings.

Lamp by Ettore Sottsass

This is a coffin in the shape of a Mercedes Benz made by Samuel Kane Kwei which would be for wealthy customers. I'd seen a few photos of coffins like this from Ghana, they're a representation of an aspect or activity of that person's life that was most distinct.

They also had some posters made by Japanese graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo, whos work generally seems to be very surreal. I also found a video on youtube of an animation by him which I really like >>>>>>

Terra Incognita

Some observational drawings that I did this summer to start illustrating the book Terra Incognita by Vladimir Nabokov. Put simply, the story is about three explorers that get lost in the jungle after their guides desert them. The narrator of the story is suffering from a sickness and becomes increasingly ill as it goes along, and he starts suffering from hallucinations that imply he's actually in a sick bed in hospital rather than the jungle. The other two explorers start arguing and consequently have a fight and kill each other, leaving the narrator to die alone. The reader is left to basically question which reality is which.

The start of second year has been really busy and good so far, we've been given lots of tasks to help us think about our stories in different ways. The first task was to illustrate 4 little books from four different perspectives of the story, the second was to illustrate everything from the story on a big A1 sheet of paper, the third is to create a doll from one of the characters and the fourth is to create a diorama of a chosen environment from our story. I'm really excited about trying out the 3D tasks as it's something that I'm not all that familiar with doing.

Black and white french science fiction film made in 1902 called A Trip to the Moon written and directed by Georges Melies. This is greattt I feel silly for only just finding out about it... because I watched the Simpsons and they did an Itchy and Scratchy version of it... The aliens bursting into smoke after being hit with umbrellas are my favourite part hahaha. I'm guessing this is where the Mighty Boosh's inspiration for their moon character came from.

I drew this recently for a commission I was doing for a record label in Japan called Big Love, but it wasn't used so I'll post it here - hence the new lizard banner as well. I'm still really excited about it all because it's my first ever commission, I had to design a record sleeve and label for a new artist called Sapphire Slows debut 7"! I don't know whether I'm allowed to post the work I did for it before it's actual release so I won't post it for now and will get photos of the record when it's out! Exciting.

on thursday I essentially finished first year! Just waiting for my assessment feedback and then I will be completely done. I think I'm going to set myself a few projects/hopefully get some zines printed and finally make an etsy shop to keep myself busy.

I found out the other day that someone had used one of my drawings to create a logo design that they were selling in their etsy shop (the person apologised and the listing has been taken down now), apparently they got the drawing from a free clip art pack on deviantart which I don't really understand. Obviously it's really flattering, but also pretty unfair that people can make money from things I have done without my permission but it seems there's not much I can do now really so oh well.

My project for easter is to research lots about St. Catherine of Alexandria, it was annoying me at first but I think I like it now.

Catherinettes was a traditional French label for girls of 25 years old who were still unmarried by the feast of St Catherine on the 25th November. A special celebration was offered to them on this day, while everyone wished them a fast end to their singlehood.

It's finished now but these are a couple of the pictures I took when I went to Pick Me Up (was very happy to go as I missed out going to the previous one). It was really good, I went twice in the end because the first time I went I completely missed out on all the side rooms/studios which was really silly of me. It's Nice That had some tables set out where illustrators were doing live drawing which was pretty cool but I forgot to take a photo, oops. My favourite thing was probably the big sushis made out of cardboard in the nobrow shop.

i went along to an open drawing evening the other week where we basically had to draw a still life for 45 minutes but only with cross hatching which was fun. the second drawing we were told to spend half an hour on and its meant to be like what the artist Sol Lewitt has done for his work. i found it pretty boring to be fair and the end result kind of just looks like pubic hair, maybe i didn't do it right...

These are the observational drawings I did out and about when walking around with my group and tutors during the day. The last one is drawn from the top of the hill in Budapest where the castle is, it was SO cold that day.

Also whilst I'm doing a post thought I'd moan at how unorganised my stupid halls are. I've come home today to find a letter under my door telling me that my room along with several others are going to be repainted, it only states that it's happening on 'Wednesday January 2011' oh okay cheers mate that really helps me! This means it's probably going to be happening tomorrow, so basically i've been given not even a days notice to empty all of the stuff out of my room and put it into my shower room, this includes taking all of the photos and blutack off my walls and taking everything out of my wardrobe as well, and this is all happening despite the fact I've told them twice I don't want my room repainted. :( UNHAPPY

i've been meaning to watch this film for a little while now and have only just gotten round to it. my favourite scenes from the film in particular were the ones without any dialogue just playing classical music, like in the youtube video. it's an odd film because when you're watching it it doesn't seem asif it was made like 40 years ago. anyway i watched this then remembered that i bought a big book on space from a charity shop about two months ago so i thought i'd get it out and do some drawing. i think i'm gonna do a few more but for now it's 4:38am and i'm kinda tired haha

today i finally went to see the museum of everything as i've been meaning to for a good month or so now. it definitely lived up to expectations! there were funny mirrors, lots of photos of weird people, circus things, old mechanical toys, weird dolls, a room of shells, fun embroidery and lastly really funny taxidermy which was my fave. absolutely loved it in there, and seeing as no photography was allowed it was an even more perfect excuse to draw. there was an artists work in there that i particularly liked which i've included an example of (you'll also notice that i drew a piece as well)... wish i was good at embroidery.

the other day we were asked to create a zine about our friends research on their chair of choice. i swapped with my friend lindsay and she's done her research on the electric chair. basically my story is about the AC and DC current and how there was a fight over which one to use for the chair and which one to use in the home. we were only given like a couple of hours to do it so it was quite fun to see what everyone could do in such a short space of time.

i came back from budapest yesterday (went last tuesday for a course trip) and it was just completely amazing and great and i just really really don’t want to be back in new cross right now :( we went to the famous thermal baths which were amazing but with lots of naked old ladies wandering around. we spent lots of time wandering around and just generally taking in the surroundings, all of the old buildings were absolutely beautiful and i loved all of the cute little houses that you would find a bit out of the centre. i also went to a flea market on the outskirts of the city where you had to haggle prices down, at first i was really shit and then i got good so that was fun. our hotel was in quite a non touristy area i think, so that was quite interesting to see as it was just lots of ugly (but i think theyre quite cool looking anyway) towerblocks and funny locals. i've taken quite a few photos but they're all with disposable/my olympus trip because i don't actually have a small digital camera to bring around with me so for now these images are of the things that i bought at the flea market over there. the stamps are easily my favourite purchase as i like stamps and well they're just really good. i found the photos in an old box and as i was looking through them noticed that they were mostly of people stood by graves so i picked out the nicest of those so they would look like a little set. the other scans are of nice hungarian magazine pages which i particularly liked. drawings and photos to come sooooon

chairs project

interesting things:

been given a new project about chairs... basically we had to pick one chair we found interesting and we have to go into great depth researching it. admittedly at first i really didn't like the idea of this because i don't find chairs/chair design particularly interesting... but i randomly found an good book in the library about folk furniture and started reading up about a small community of people called the Doukhobors (russian immigrants that moved to canada). for me this is a much more interesting thing to look in rather than the just chair itself but still there are elements of what they believe in that is shown in their furniture design, e.g. they were big believers in vegetarianism - therefore the decorative engravings into the wood of the chair were all based on natural forms etc. etc.

i quite like the fact that i've never actually heard of this group of people before because it'll make it much more interesting for me to research as i literally know nothing. above are some sketchbook pages that i've already done for this and a little collection of images and bits i've found whilst researching them that i like. hopefully you'll find them interesting too :)

more work from an exercise we had to do in class. this time films were projected onto a wall in our studio and we had to draw from them and pay close attention to the environment in the scene. it was fun :)

last week our tutors set up a workshop for us to draw/collage things from the top of our head whilst listening to particular music that they had chosen, these are a few of my outcomes from this. i have a couple of others that i'd like to post on here as well but i can't find those at the momentt so shall re-update when i've found them. lately i haven't been drawing on white paper very much, it's good to have a change. i usually feel that i'm not so great at drawing things off the top of my head too so this was a good exercise for me, think this will be something i'll repeat in my own time.
